Colvest/Belchertown LLC Razes Building At Popular Retail Center
The commercial building located at 139-141 North Washington Street, adjacent to CVS Pharmacy, was razed this week.  It had previously been the home of Subway, and most recently, Moulton Insurance Agency.

Belchertown Local Aid Remains The Same In Governor's Proposed Budget
Governor Deval Patrick released his proposed budget today for fiscal year 2013, which starts on July 1.  The governor’s budget local aid allocation for Belchertown is the same as the budget for fiscal year 2012 with $13,251,093 going to the schools and $1,335,093 in unrestricted funds. The budget for the state agency responsible for overseeing compliance of Upper Bondsville Dam also remained at FY '12 level.

Town Treasurer Lisa Banner posted 19 properties to be taken by the town for non-payment of taxes in the January 12 edition of your hometown newspaper since 1915.  That is, they will be taken if their taxes aren’t paid by January 27.  This does not mean, however, that the town will officially own the property.

Belchertown Saves Money After October 29 Nor'easter Clean-up By Not Hiring State Vendor; Selectmen Approve Transfer Station Fee Increase; Town Secures $900K For Intersection Expansion
DPW Director Steven Williams met with the Board of Selectmen on Monday seeking their approval of changes to the Transfer Station's regulations, to discuss the Maple Street/Jabish Street/Main Street intersection, and to update them on the October 29 nor’easter clean-up effort.  Williams also enumerated how the town saved money by not using a state vendor to clear the debris left from the storm.

Two Belchertown teens face felony charges in connection with an October 31 break-in of Town Mart, located at the corner of Route 9 and Route 202, after one of the teens recently confessed to the crime.  Officers John Raymer and Jason Christofori conducted the investigation that ultimately led to the  confession.

PITTSBURGH - An 8-0 late in the second half gave Duquesne an 80-69 win over the UMass men's basketball team on Wednesday night at the Palumbo Center. The Minutemen committed a season-high 29 turnovers in the loss and dealt with foul trouble throughout the game. Jesse Morgan had a team-best 14 points, while Sean Carter had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Construction Company Pays $2.3 Million to Resolve Fraudulent Overbilling In The Renovation Of Logan Airport
BOSTON – A California-based construction company has paid an additional $2.3 million to resolve allegations that it submitted false and inflated invoices to the Massachusetts Port Authority (“Massport”) during the renovation of Logan International Airport, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced today. This amount is in addition to the $1 million paid by URS Corporation (“URS”) to Massport prior to this litigation.

Massachusetts Unemployment Rate Drops To 6.8%
The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported today that the total unemployment rate was 6.8 percent, down 0.2 of a percentage point from the November rate of 7.0 percent, and well below the national rate of 8.5 percent. It is the lowest monthly rate since December of 2008. The preliminary December estimates show a decrease of 6,200 jobs in Massachusetts, for a total of 3,234,500 jobs.
